Francisco López – Amarok

30 Mar

FRANCISCO LOPEZ
Amarok
Glacial Movements

On Amarok sound sculptor Francisco López softens a savage terrain of whirring buzz like a brewing storm, then cuts suddenly, short and flat, to cool drone breezes. This lengthy hour plus work captures the sense of territorial distances, something akin to open torch flames and the echo of the outdoors. Like few of his recent releases López has treated his sources to a lush full course of thin layered varying depths of field. One can lavish in the work almost as if it were photographic, depicting a cryptic background of nerve-ending like fleeting activity while a curvy, hushness dances at close range. The charge of a sifting blur bleeds through a majority of the dark center here before a brisk release comes in the final dozen minutes. In its dramatic finality, Amarok poses a detached embrace of sorts, much like López’s live concert work. The journey ends as the cycle began in bare, slow silence.

Elektra 11

26 Mar

The (other) International Digital Arts Festival in Montreal is eleven years old! In celebration the superb Elektra (May 5-9) has just been co-bestowed with the 25th Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal (along with Mutek, interestingly enough). Congratulations! In today’s announcement of their first artists to perform this year they noted a Raster-Noton Showcase which will include: Mika Vainio, new work by Byetone (Olaf Bender), and the Canadian premiere of work by both Aoki Takamasa and Grisha Lichtenberger. Also, a Montreal reprise of Herman Kolgen‘s Inject (although it is listed as v.02…) as well as the brand-new North American debut of Dust! The fest will also include a laserlight sound performance by Edwin van der Heide, an ensemble concert with video from Sylvain Pohu & Sixtrum and other audio visual works yet to be announced, watch their blog for more….

RGB Installation by Gal

25 Mar

Austrian composer and interdisciplinary artist (Bernhard) Gal is about to once again unveil his latest site-specific installation called RGB (2001). This sound work includes various household items like a toaster and aquarium alongside software and other bells and whistles, with each object assigned corresponding colors. Shown at Das Weisse Haus in Vienna as part of the Transformers exhibition. Stay tuned online for further information. Gal’s Installations book (Kehrer Verlag, 2005) covers this intermedia work and many of his other inventions over the last decade plus, one of over fifty such works!

Bridge Carols on Tour

24 Mar

The latest collaborative disc between Ethan Rose and Laura Gibson is a gentle breeze. I’m gonna generously deem their sound ‘field folk’ for its calm balance between lush, warm vocals and recordings from the environment that have been digitally processed and layered like fine Irish linen. This gem entitled Bridge Carols is out now on Holocene Music. See the new video Younger (directed by Ryan Jeffery).

It’s Dark But It’s Okay – Notic Nastic

23 Mar

NOTIC NASTIC
It’s Dark But It’s Okay
Shitkatapult

On their debut It’s Dark But It’s Okay (released 4/27) Notic Nastic generously reshapes parts of Ladytron with Chicks on Speed, and adds a pinch of The Knife to put you in their ballpark. A NY/Berlin concoction punctuated by driven beats and dense afterdark, partygirl vocals. The twisted atmosphere is completely tick-tock upbeat. Tracks like Highend Weirdo and The Luckiest Pig in Albany do a booty good. Humorous lyrics are only further fancified with charismatic pause and flippant retro amped-up sound-effects, dipping into the last two decades with a full steam ahead attitude. Shorter instrumental pieces add to the chaotic fun here (Fjord Escort, Banana Hammock). Watch for wild costumed stage shows come Summer.

New Dandy Jack

22 Mar

The 12″ is still very much alive and well in clubland, dotted pretty universally over and above the axis of borders and walls that separate us. This new one called 39 Steps is on the Chilean Ruta5 and is limited to only 300 – but what’s best is this one includes the savory beats of one Dandy Jack and the Metronome Allstars. Flip it for new Swiss-based Andrès Garcìa…Open your ears here.

Mutek 2010 Sneak Peek

21 Mar

JUNE 2010: One of the leading international electronic music events releases the first glance at artists performing at this year’s 11th Annual Mutek Festival in Montreal. I’ve really enjoyed my travels to Quebec for this, and last year was quite special – intimate and overwhelming experiences to be had in/outdoors. Always on the cutting edge of what’s out there, festival coordinators have been scouring the globe to find the brightest a/v talent, new work from veteran artist/producers and many surprises. This year they bring favorites Vladislav Delay, Matmos (check out their ’01 debut podcast), Tim Hecker, Mouse on Mars and Carl Michael Von Hausswolff to the stage as well as the following:

ACTRESS (UK), BEN FROST (AU), BRANDT BRAUER FRICK (DE), THE CARETAKER (UK), CHEAP & DEEP (US), DAVE AJU (US), DEMDIKE STARE (UK), DIXON (DE), DJ KOZE (DE), GUILLAUME & THE COUTU DUMONTS (CA), HENRIK SCHWARZ (DE), IKONIKA (UK), JON HOPKINS (UK), KING MIDAS SOUND (UK), MARSEN JULES (DE), MATIAS AGUAYO PRESENTS CÓMEME (CL), MINILOGUE (SE), MORITZ VON OSWALD TRIO (DE), NICOLAS JAAR (CL), PAUL KALKBRENNER (DE), PÉPÉ BRADOCK (FR), REBOLLEDO (MX), SAN PROPER (NL), SHED (DE), THEO PARRISH (US)
