Patrick Shiroishi | 烏の涙
American Damage (CS/DL)

Issued on Chicago’s American Damage tape label, this new release by Patrick Shiroishi blends folky blues with wild improvisation to a stunningly contrasting effect.  Shiroishi’s guitar playing is incendiary and it sounds like he has an extra pair of hands on the fret board as he lets loose.  His vocals are sparse and occasional but add splashes of calm to proceedings, especially when whispered.

Both sides of the tape are taken up with a ten-minute long track each.  The first is the more avant garde of the two, those wild-style strums really breaking free of any normal restraints.  Side two utilizes space more, with longer silences between the notes at the beginning of the piece.  This doesn’t last too long before the strums become stronger and that free-form playing raises the heat to ecstatic levels.
